Understanding Emotional Intelligence in Real Life

This post explores an emotional intelligence concept and how it shows up in real life. In work, relationships, social situations, wellbeing, and personal growth. Emotional intelligence helps people understand what they feel, manage reactions, build healthier connections, and move through life with more awareness and balance.

Don’t hope for change make it happen

Before I share a good motivational message on this topic. Just know that I too was a champion of procrastination. I knew my worth! I had a plan and set out goals, I knew who to call upon and who I should avoid. But — being a champion of procrastination — I nearly failed to achieve my goals because I didn’t push myself. Emphasis on the underlined word, nearly. Because I nearly failed if I didn’t choose to push for my goals.

Please answer this question. If I roll a ball in your direction but the ball’s momentum isn’t good. And the ball looks like it’s slowing down, what will you do? Do you wait and see if the ball will reach you, or do you move towards the ball and you pick it up? It won’t be nice if the ball doesn’t reach you. So I bet you’d reach for it. Success works like this. It works when you move towards your goals.

Here’s a personal side note. I recently watched a Bill Gates documentary on Netflix called, “INSIDE BILL’S MIND.” There’s a part in the documentary where Bill and his best friend at the time, Kent Evans, are chilling in school daydreaming about their future. Where the young boys, not even men, are deciding on career paths. Emphasis on the underlined word, deciding.

Why having and dream and doing nothing to achieve it leads to failure

It amazed me because the vision the two boys had is motivational. While boys in their grade are planning different things. Bill, and Kent were further down the road in thinking. Knowing that planning today brings desired outcomes tomorrow. So be like Bill Gates and Kent Evans as soon as possible. Why? Because the two boys knew that they have the potential to achieve great things.

But it’s what they did after daydreaming (working towards their goals) which brought about the results we all know today. They acted on their dreams. It was a bro-moment, and one of many Bill Gates think tanks at work, in my opinion. It was focused planning developing a mind map to success.

The key is to move towards your goals. Do positive things knowing that your effort will help you succeed. Even if something is hard or taxing to complete you do it anyway and you remain focused. That’s the key to success. You move towards your goals by doing the small things continuously; you don’t wait for the ball to reach you. You do your part and you move towards it, meeting it along the way. This enables you to succeed faster and more effectively.

Why hard work pays off

Hard work really pays off. Doing what challenges you delivers success. If you’re tired and you feel like you don’t want to move forward, remember that picking up the ball is your choice. Just do it. Once you pick up the ball you’ll realize it only needed a bit of effort and it’s done. If you feel like you’re doing the same thing over and over repetitively, just do it. Your momentum directed towards success is 1% better than 0% of doing nothing. Keep moving forward.

Where to from here?

If you have something you need to do, if you have something you’ve ignored for a while now. If you have something you need to start. Just do it. You beat procrastination by doing whatever you need to do regardless of anxiety or tiredness. Everyday you pursue your goals it will get easier.

Conclusion

  • Why procrastination leads to failed dreams

Don’t look back and regret not achieving your goals. A time will come when you look back, and you will look back. You will either be glad you overcame procrastination, or you will acknowledge lost opportunities.
