Understanding Emotional Intelligence in Real Life

This post explores an emotional intelligence concept and how it shows up in real life. In work, relationships, social situations, wellbeing, and personal growth. Emotional intelligence helps people understand what they feel, manage reactions, build healthier connections, and move through life with more awareness and balance.

How and what is beyond your control?

In the dystopian movie, Waterworld, starring Kevin Costner. Inside a dilapidated oil tanker is an old man who has been lowered into the oil storage area to measure how much oil is left before it runs out. He was lowered into it by the leader of a bad group of people.

Periodically, the boss, Deacon, opens the storage door and asks how much oil is left. The old man yells that there are exactly nine feet and four inches of “the black stuff” remaining.

This old man has been deliberately lowered inside the oil storage area with no escape by the evil boss, which Kevin Costner battles.

Can you imagine yourself being put inside an oil tankers storage area against your will? You live inside of it breathing in fumes, and God knows what else. You’re at the mercy of an evil man, and therefore, my question still stands:

Is giving up okay when things are beyond your control?

At the end of the old man’s scene, after a big battle occurs on the top side. A flame falls inside the storage area where the old man is floating about in a feeble boat, floating on top of exactly nine feet and four inches of “the black stuff.” The old man’s last words as he sees the flame falling down. He exhales and says, ‘Oh, thank God!’ This was a sad moment.

It’s a terrible ending but a big relief for him because I can only imagine how long he had to live inside the storage area. So here’s my question. Is giving up okay when things are beyond your control?

How and what in your life is beyond your control? Sometimes, just like the wars we witness around the world where the hope of achieving success is merely hope. We know of a small portion of survivors like Malala Yousafazi from Afghanistan.

What of all the other people who have hope but are stuck? An oil storage area like existence with no end insight. Can you forgive a person under such conditions if they give up on life?
