Understanding Emotional Intelligence in Real Life

This post explores an emotional intelligence concept and how it shows up in real life. In work, relationships, social situations, wellbeing, and personal growth. Emotional intelligence helps people understand what they feel, manage reactions, build healthier connections, and move through life with more awareness and balance.

Do you remember when you first learned to walk? When do you begin to step at a time? Do you remember, when you first looked at everything from your tiny feet? Everything felt so far away and out of reach of your little hands. The legs of the chair and the legs of the bench are like sticks to keep you standing.

Under the dining table is your favorite place, the dining table is enough to cover your head. You looked up and saw the beautiful lights, you were amazed to see them, and then you stretched out your hand to reach out to them. But you can’t. Everything seemed so far away and unattainable to your little hands and feet that it was trying to reach.

Then you hear a voice calling you. You searched around limpingly, but you didn’t find it. The voice called you again. You get more curious and hit the floor quickly to find the source of the sound. Your little hands and feet try to keep your balance as you run to find who is calling you.

Such a soft, voice that you know comes from the one who loves you. The same voice sounds beckoning to you again, you look around you once more, but you still don’t find that voice. All you see around you are your scattered toy cars, 4 chair legs, a balloon, some books, crayons and finally your favorite dining table.

You run and and slump under the dining table, just in case the source of the sound is coming from there. And you hear that voice once again, accompanied by a soft laugh.

“Where are you looking, son? Look I’m on top of you.”

You raise your head and see the source of the sound. Your mother stood opposite you and smiled at you. You smile and think “Hey, look I can find you.” Then you stretch out your little hand, trying to reach it. Trying to kiss her, trying to hold her hand. However, ouch!! Your hand can’t reach it.

Suddenly your Mother feels so far away from you. She stands tall and you can’t reach it. You start to get disappointed and cry. You want your mother!! You want to kiss her, hold her cheek, you want to pull her hair. You want your mother, but you can’t achieve it… Your mother feels so far away.

And suddenly you feel your body lifted. There is a pair of hands holding your small waist. You see your mother smile and say, “Well, I found you!” You reach out with your hand, and “Hey look,” you cheer, you can hold her cheek. He laughs when your hands hold his cheek. Even when one of your hands pulls her hair, she laughs and she pulls you closer to her and kisses you on the cheek. You laugh with pleasure. Finally you can grab your mother. Oh no, finally your mother can grab you and hold you.

How often do we feel that God is far away and unattainable to our hands? Or maybe we would love to reach out to Him but, your hands are not long. Your feet are not high enough to reach Him. Have we ever felt that God was far away from us, thinking and imagining ourselves like children with such limited vision that we could not see that we were actually under His feet!! We are less than 10 cm from His presence. Our view is very limited. Unlike His views!! In His sight we are so close, that His hands can reach out and draw us closer to Him.

To Him we are so close, that the sound of our breath is heard by Him. When He bowed His head, there was us at His feet. He smiles and laughs when He sees you looking for Him, even though you are at His feet. And finally, He lifts your waist, takes you up to be able to kiss you. To let you hold His cheek, to let you pull His hair. He is very close to you. All you need is to stick your hands up, lift your head up, and He will lift you up. He will bend down and stretch out His hand.

If you feel so far away from Him, remember you’re near His feet.
