Let’s not beat around the bush. A global recession is coming, and the people who are mentally ready for it cope better than people with anxiety. The reason why emotional intelligence helps you in a global recession is due to the intentional development of your demeanor. As we deal with financial constraints. You’ll find yourself needing support for a lot of things, and making sure that your emotional well-being is empowered is your responsibility.

How does a global recession affect me?

For example, I was young when the 2008 financial crisis hit. I remember a lot of changes at home when we couldn’t buy certain groceries. To me, they were important, but to my mother, I began to hear these words. We can’t afford it. That’s a luxury. And this painful word… No.

In 2008, I had no job, and I was in the midst of finding myself. I didn’t know how to support my mom at home because money became the number one priority to keep the household afloat. People weren’t hiring, and more people were beginning to stay at home. I saw grownups abandoning their cars and using public transport. I remember one neighbor telling me to keep my head up no matter what. Today, it makes sense what he was going through back then because I understand that he was speaking to himself by advising me. Keep your head up when things are bad. If you’re feeling depressed keep your head up. If you’re worried about something, remember to keep your head up.

Emotional intelligence is the best tool that will help you cope. Whatever life throws at you, if you keep your head up, you won’t drown. We made it through 2008. It was a bad time, and we suffered, but we made it through. My mom is a strong woman, and because of her resolve and never give up attitude, we were able to remain afloat. I don’t know how the recession will impact your life, but I know that all of us will have to deal with it. Emotional intelligence means understanding that there’s a problem in your life, and that’s okay. It’s how you deal with it that reveals if you’ve grasped what we are teaching you.

Emotional intelligence means that as long as you don’t quit on yourself, life may deal you with bad cards on the table, but you won’t give up. One big thing you can do for yourself if you’re feeling overwhelmed is to ask for help. I remember in 2008 having to go to places to get assistance when we needed things. I asked my mom why we were here. And I saw food and financial support being given to us. At that time, I thought my mom was running errands, but I honestly didn’t know what was happening. But I know now, and I know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. If you feel overwhelmed, ask for help. If you feel that you need help, ask for help. Don’t suffer when there’s someone out there who can help. Just ask for help because we all need support.
